I spotted Mummy hog by the water feature last night and wondered why she was laying out in the open. I went to check her and she immediately curled up(good sign), so left her be. Daddy was sniffing around again so thought I would just let them get on with whatever hedgehogs do and go to bed.
This morning she was still there.
I checked on her and this time she does not roll up. Her eyes were open and she was breathing, but it was shallow.
I phoned our local wildlife ceter and they said to take her and the babies into them.
After collecting the babies and putting them in a box with mum, me and Daisy drove to the center.
They looked at her and said that she was a very young mum and that she was most likely highly dehydrated and drained from the babies.
They will keep her and wean the babies off her during the week. Giving her fluids to build her strength up. Obvioulsy they will make sure that is all it is and not some nasty bug or anything.
We asked if there was any chance we could have them back but they do not give babies back as they could interbreed.
We have to phone in a week to see how they are all doing and if mummy is well, they may let us bring her home as she knows this area well and has hybernated here before.
I am so glad that they willbe treated and looked after but so sad that we will never see them grow.
